Quran Tuition

Assalamu alaikum.

Whenever Ramadan come, there are so many things that we want to do to uplift our spirituality. Ramadan is associated with the revelation of the Quran. We are excited if we can join tarawih prayers where the imam will complete the whole Quran in the month of Ramadan. We also wish and endure to complete reciting the whole of the Quran during the month of Ramadan. Completing the whole Quran will bring great satisfaction to us. Many of the pious completed Quran much faster that what we aim for. Imam ash-Shafi’i completed the Quran twice a day in the month of Ramadan. “Wow! Are you kidding?” “We struggle to complete the Quran in one month and how come that guy can complete it in half a day?” Our first impression might be of disbelief because we compare the capability of Imam ash-Shafii with ourselves or with the people around us. According to Imam an-Nawawi, the practice of the first three generations of Muslims differs in the time taken to complete the recitation of the whole Quran. Some took a few days to complete. Some completed 8 times in a day i.e. 4 times during daytime and 4 times at night, with As-Sayyid al-Jalil ibnul Katib ash-Shufi as one of them.

It is a great achievement and satisfaction whenever we complete the Quran. However, we live in a period where not everybody knows how to read the Quran. There can be many reasons and some of the reasons were beyond our control. For example, when there were very few Muslims in the UK in the 1960s or 1970s, there was basically no infrastructure for the teaching of Quran. As a result, many Muslims who were children during those period do not know how to read the Quran. Trying to learn how to read when they are adults can be very embarrassing. Some will memorise a few surahs like Al-Fatihah, the three or four Quls and ayat al-Kursi to arm themselves against the evils of shaitan for the rest of their lives.

Nowadays there are many mosques and places where parents can send their children to learn how to read the Quran. However location and timing may not suit parents. Not all parents have the time to teach their children at home and some parents also do not know how to read the Quran. We are not here to put the blame on anyone but we need to acknowledge that there is a problem and we need to address this problem and provide the necessary solutions.

Melayu UK can provide an online personal tutorial service for teaching how to read the Quran and also for checking or improving your recitation. The fee is £10 per 50-minute session. This service is open to all regardless of age, sex or whether they are members of Melayu UK. So please let others know about this service.
